PlayStation 4 users have awoken this morning to find a brand new app on their console, PlayStation 5 Remote Play. At the time of writing, there has been no word from Sony on the matter. It’s not hard to work out what this new app will do, though.
As you’d expect, if you have any prior knowledge of the PlayStation ecosystem’s Remote Play App, PS5 Remote Play will allow you to stream PS5 games to your PS4. Unfortunately, we don’t have access to a PS5 right now, but other press sites, such as VGC, have reported that they could not use the feature with a pre-release PS5 model.
PS5 Remote Play app seems to work as a PS5-specific version of the standard Remote Play app. Users need to open the PS5 Remote Play app on their PS5 and set it to discoverable. Then, on their PS4, they need to discover the PS5 before they can stream games to it. The app will make it possible to play PS5 games in any room without owning multiple consoles. It gives users a reason to hold onto their PS4 and perhaps use it in a different room.
Interestingly, PS5 Remote Play app could make it possible to use a DualSense controller on a PS4. Albeit, you’ll still only be able to play PS5 games with it.
I can definitely see the advantage of the app. Unless you have a PS4 Pro, there’s no need for a PS4 to be connected to a 4K TV. You could move the PS4 to a different TV, keeping it in reserve when the main 4K enabled TV isn’t available.
The PS5 launches this week on November 12 in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. The console comes to the rest of the world on November 19. Hopefully, by then, Sony has outlined the exact functionality of this app.
